My Approach

My approach is warm, curious, careful, and engaged.

Psychotherapy means having a space all to yourself where you can be open and honest in the presence of another human being. For many individuals, this experience will be a novel one. Because of the emotional risks often involved in the decision to open up to another person, I strive to facilitate a safe therapeutic space that is both consistently and appropriately paced. I am compassionate and encouraging, and I try to bring a sense of humor to the work whenever possible.

It has been said that the purpose of therapy is to help you to work, to love, and to play. While this idea serves as a broad foundation for me in my conceptualization of what it is that psychotherapy is meant to do, I am more interested in what you tell me you want to get out of therapy, and in helping you work toward those goals.

And while I will work on specific goals with you, I differ from therapists who are only interested in getting rid of specific behaviors or adding new ones. I provide insight-oriented, in-depth psychotherapy. My theoretical approach is psychoanalytic and contemporary. This means that I believe in the unconscious and in utilizing the rich information that may be generated between us in our clinical relationship as a result of our unconscious minds 'dancing' with one another. I will share my insights and experience of you and of our relationship in a non-judgmental and playful way with the goal of allowing you to take more risks and to feel more free.
